How to use these emoji combos

  1. Pick a category that fits your mood or your post.
  2. Tap a combo to copy the whole set of emoji in one go.
  3. Paste it at the end of a bio line, a caption or a message.
  4. Check it on your profile. If one emoji shows as a box, swap it for an older, more common one.

Emoji combinations by category

Every combo has a feel, and grouping them by theme makes the right one quick to find. Soft and cute is where most people start for cute emoji combos, but there is plenty more. Here is a taste of popular themes:

Make your own aesthetic emoji combos

The best combos follow a simple recipe: one theme, one colour family, one accent.

  1. Theme: choose what the combo is about, for example the beach.
  2. Colour: pick emoji in one colour family, such as blues and whites: ๐ŸŒŠ ๐Ÿค ๐Ÿณ.
  3. Accent: add one small sparkle, heart or flower to finish it, such as โœจ.

Three emoji is usually enough, and five is a sensible maximum. More than that starts to look like a random pile. For a divider line, repeat a short pattern, such as a flower, a dot and a flower. You can also slip in text symbols like โœง or โ™ก from the symbols page, which stay plain and calm next to colourful emoji.

Bio emoji ideas: where to put combos

  • Bios: put one combo at the end of a line, or start each line with a single emoji as a bullet. Our guide to aesthetic Instagram bios has full layouts.
  • Names: one or two emoji after your name is plenty. Name fields are short (Instagram's is currently 30 characters), and a single emoji can use two or more of them.
  • Captions: end with a combo that matches the photo instead of filling the middle of your sentence.
  • Status lines: a WhatsApp About line has room for about 139 characters, so a short quote plus one combo fits nicely.

Why emoji look different on every phone

An emoji is a character, just like a letter. Unicode decides what each one means, but Apple, Google, Samsung, Microsoft and others each draw their own pictures. So the same ๐Ÿฅบ can look softer on an iPhone and rounder on an Android phone, and colours and details can change. A combo that looks perfectly matched on your phone may look a little different on a friend's. Choose emoji whose meaning is obvious in any design, and don't build a combo that depends on one exact shade.

New emoji on old phones

New emoji are added to Unicode most years, and a phone can only show the ones its software knows about. On an older phone, a brand-new emoji may appear as an empty box or a question mark. Some newer emoji are built by joining two older ones with an invisible character. The phoenix ๐Ÿฆโ€๐Ÿ”ฅ is a bird plus fire, so an older phone may show it as two separate emoji, ๐Ÿฆ๐Ÿ”ฅ. If you want everyone to see your combo the same way, stick to emoji that have been around for a few years.

One more thing: screen readers read every emoji aloud by name, so "cherry blossom, strawberry, ribbon" is what some followers will hear. Keep combos short, and never use emoji in place of important words.

Pair emoji with fonts

Emoji look great beside one gentle font, for example โ„Šโ„ดโ„ด๐’น ๐“‚โ„ด๐“‡๐“ƒ๐’พ๐“ƒโ„Š๐“ˆ followed by a coffee and a tulip, or ๊œฑแด๊œฐแด› แด‡ส€แด€ with a cloud. The aesthetic fonts and preppy fonts pages have matching letter styles, heart symbols add a quieter touch, and text art adds faces like kaomoji. Bigger emoji art, where emoji are arranged into a picture over several lines, can fall apart on narrow screens, so test it before you post.

Frequently asked questions

What are emoji combos?

Small sets of emoji chosen to go together, usually by theme or colour, so they create a mood instead of just one picture. People use them in bios, captions and chats.

How do I use emoji combos in my Instagram bio?

Tap a combo to copy it, open your profile, edit your bio and paste it at the end of a line. Keep your key words in plain text so people understand what you do.

Why do my emoji look different on my friend's phone?

Each company draws its own emoji designs. The meaning is the same, but the picture can differ between iPhone, Android and Windows.

Why does an emoji show as a box or a question mark?

The device is older than that emoji, so it has no picture for it. Updating the phone's software usually fixes it, or choose a more established emoji.

How many emoji should I use in a bio?

Around one combo of three to five emoji, or one emoji per line as bullets. Too many make a bio hard to read.

Can I use emoji in my game name?

Many games refuse emoji in names. Text symbols such as โ˜… or ใƒ„ usually have a better chance. See the stylish name generator for game-friendly ideas.
