How to make text bold in any app
- Type or paste your text in the box above. The live preview shows sans bold, serif bold and bold italic straight away.
- Tap the style you want. The card shows "Copied โ".
- Paste it into your post, comment, bio or name field.
- Writing for one app? Pick it in the platform menu. The character counter then shows how much space you have left, counted the strict way.
To bold only part of a sentence, type just those words, copy the bold version and paste it next to your plain text.
Sans bold, serif bold or bold italic?
Bold letters here are not formatting. They are separate Unicode characters, first added so mathematicians could tell a bold symbol apart from a normal one. Because the boldness is part of each character, it survives copy and paste. There are four main bold font styles to choose from:
| Style | Example | Feels like |
|---|---|---|
| Sans bold | ๐๐ผ๐น๐ฑ ๐ง๐ฒ๐ ๐ | Clean and modern. The most popular choice, and the style in the alphabet chart below. |
| Serif bold | ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ ๐๐๐ฑ๐ญ | Classic, like a newspaper headline. Good for formal posts. |
| Sans bold italic | ๐ฝ๐ค๐ก๐ ๐๐๐ญ๐ฉ | Energetic and urgent. |
| Serif bold italic | ๐ฉ๐๐๐ ๐ป๐๐๐ | Dramatic, like a book cover. |
Sans bold and serif bold both include digits, so prices, dates and step numbers can be bold too, for example ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฒ. Punctuation and currency signs stay normal.
Bold text examples for posts and captions
Bold works best as a signpost: a hook, a heading, or one key phrase. Here are patterns that read well:
| You type | Bold result | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Stop scrolling | ๐ฆ๐๐ผ๐ฝ ๐๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ผ๐น๐น๐ถ๐ป๐ด | The first line of a caption |
| Step 1 | ๐ฆ๐๐ฒ๐ฝ ๐ญ: Plan your week | Numbered tips in a post |
| Key takeaway | ๐๐๐ฒ ๐ญ๐๐ค๐๐๐ฐ๐๐ฒ | Section headings in a LinkedIn post |
| Arjun | ๐๐ฟ๐ท๐๐ป | A display name that stands out without looking too fancy |
Bold text on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and X
- Instagram has no bold option in bios, captions or comments, so Unicode bold is the only way. See Instagram fonts for where it works, and our guide to bold text in Instagram comments.
- Facebook offers formatting in only a few places, so most posts and comments are plain. Bold headings help long posts. More tips are on the Facebook font generator.
- LinkedIn posts have no bold button. A bold hook and a few bold headings make a long post easier to skim. The LinkedIn bold text page has a counter set up for posts and headlines.
- X (Twitter) usually counts each bold letter as two characters, so bold posts fill up faster. The X fonts page counts this for you.
Use bold sparingly: screen readers and search
Bold gets attention because it is rare. If a whole post is bold, nothing stands out, and it looks like shouting. A simple rule: one bold hook at the top, bold for short headings, and plain text for everything else.
It also matters for accessibility. Bold is the style people most often use for an entire post, and that is where it hurts most. A screen reader may read each bold letter by its full name, like "mathematical sans-serif bold capital B", or skip it, so a fully bold post can be impossible to follow by ear. Keep key details such as dates, prices, links and calls to action in plain text. Styles that screen readers struggle with are marked with a readability badge in the tool.
Search is the other catch. Bold letters are different characters from normal ones, so app search may not match them. Keep keywords and hashtags plain, since hashtags usually need normal letters to work as links.
Why bold letters sometimes show as boxes
Most modern phones and browsers display both sans and serif bold. Very old phones, some smart TVs and a few desktop apps lack the fonts, so readers see empty boxes or question marks. Each style card has a compatibility badge, but the safest check is to post a test or send it to a friend first.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a bold font I can download?
No. This is bold font copy and paste: you get Unicode characters, not a font file. That is why they work inside apps where you cannot choose a font.
How do I make text bold on Instagram?
Type your text above, tap a bold style to copy it, then paste it into your caption, comment, bio or Name field. Instagram usernames cannot use bold letters, because they only allow letters, numbers, periods and underscores.
Can I make just one word bold?
Yes. Type only that word, copy the bold version and paste it into your sentence. The Build button on any style card also sends it to the Name and Bio Builder, where each word can have its own style.
Will bold text hurt my reach?
We cannot say how any app's ranking treats it. What is clear is that search may not match bold words, so keep important keywords and hashtags in plain letters.
Why does bold text use more characters?
Bold letters sit outside the basic range of Unicode, and some apps, including X, count each one as two characters. Choose your app in the platform menu and the counter will show the real number.
How do I turn bold text back to normal?
Paste it into our fancy text to normal text converter and it returns plain letters you can edit.
Should I use bold or italic?
Use bold for hooks, headings and the one phrase that must not be missed. Use italic text for quotes, titles and softer emphasis.
