Star symbol copy and paste: how it works

  1. Scroll the star grid above and tap a star to copy it.
  2. Paste it into your bio, caption, name or document.
  3. For a rating row or a sparkly border, switch on collect mode, tap the stars in order and copy the whole tray at once.

Filled stars, outline stars and sparkles

Stars come from several corners of Unicode, so they don't all match in size or weight. Here are the ones people use most:

StarUnicode nameLookGood for
★Black starSolid five pointsRatings, names, headings
☆White starOutline five pointsEmpty rating stars, soft bios
✦Black four pointed starSolid sparkleAesthetic dividers
✧White four pointed starOutline sparkleDelicate captions
✩Stress outlined white starThin outlineMinimal decoration
✪Circled white starStar in a circleBadges, team tags
⋆Star operatorTiny starSpacing between words
✨SparklesColour emojiExcitement, glow-up posts
⭐White medium starColour emojiPraise, favourites

Notice the last two: despite its name, ⭐ is a yellow emoji, and so is ✨. They always show in colour, while every star text symbol above them takes the colour of your text.

Sparkle symbol or star: which to use?

Five-pointed stars feel bold and classic, a bit like a gold star from school or a rating. Four-pointed sparkles feel lighter and more "aesthetic", which is why they show up in soft bios and captions. A good rule: use ★ when you want to mark or rate something, and ✦ or ✧ when you just want a little shine. Mixing big and tiny stars, for example a ⋆ between two ✧, makes a gentle twinkle effect. For full sparkly frames and greetings, try the glitter text generator.

Star ratings in plain text

You can write a star rating anywhere that accepts text, even in places with no rating widget, like a WhatsApp review of a restaurant or a book list in your notes.

  • ★★★★★ for 5 out of 5
  • ★★★★☆ for 4 out of 5
  • ★★★☆☆ for 3 out of 5

Use ★ and ☆ together because they come from the same set and line up nicely. Unicode does include half-star characters, but many phones don't have a font for them, so they often appear as boxes. It is safer to write "4.5/5" next to the stars. Add the score in words as well, because a screen reader announces each star by name, which is hard to follow.

Why stars can look uneven or show as boxes

Because stars come from different Unicode blocks, your phone may draw them with different fonts. That is why ✦ can look bigger than ★, or ☆ can sit a little higher than the words beside it. It is the phone mixing fonts, not a mistake in what you copied. Rarer stars, such as pinwheel and shadowed stars, and the half stars are missing from many fonts and turn into boxes. If your bio must look the same for everyone, stick to ★, ☆, ✦ and ✧.

How to type a star symbol on a keyboard

  • Windows: press Win + . to open the emoji panel. Search "star" for emoji, or open the symbols tab for text stars. There is no classic Alt code for ★.
  • Microsoft Word: type 2605 and press Alt + X for ★, or 2606 for ☆.
  • Mac: press Ctrl + Cmd + Space and search "star" in the Character Viewer.
  • Phones: search "star" on the emoji keyboard for ⭐ and ✨. Some keyboards also offer ★ on a symbols page or when you long-press the asterisk key, so check yours. Otherwise copy ★ once and save it as a text shortcut.
  • The plain asterisk * (Shift + 8 on most keyboards) is the simplest star of all, but some apps use it for bold text.

Aesthetic stars for names and bios

The famous ★彡 frame mixes a star with 彡, a Chinese and Japanese character made of three slanted strokes. Together they look like a shooting star with a tail. Here is how stars dress up a name or a bio line:

  • Shooting star frame: ★彡 𝓠𝓾𝓮𝓮𝓷 彡★
  • Stars between letters: s★u★p★e★r★s★t★a★r
  • Soft sparkle line: ✧・゚: * 𝒹𝓇ℯ𝒶𝓂 𝒷𝒾ℊ * :・゚✧
  • Clean caps: ★彡 ᴀᴀʀᴀᴠ 彡★

The stylish name generator puts star frames around your name for games and apps, and the aesthetic fonts page pairs sparkles with matching letters. For colour, mix in a star from the emoji combos. You will find hearts on the heart symbols page and everything else under all symbols.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a black star and a white star?

★ is filled and ☆ is an outline. In Unicode names, "black" means filled and "white" means outline. It says nothing about the colour on your screen, since both take the colour of your text.

What is the sparkle symbol called?

The text sparkles are "black four pointed star" (✦) and "white four pointed star" (✧). The colour emoji ✨ is simply called "sparkles".

How do I make a star rating in text?

Copy ★ for each full star and ☆ for each empty one, for example ★★★★☆ for four out of five. Collect mode lets you build the row in one go.

Why does my star show as a box?

The device has no font for that star. Rare stars and half stars cause this most often. ★ and ☆ are safe almost everywhere.

Can I use star symbols in a game name?

Often yes, ★ is one of the most widely supported decorative symbols. Every game is different, so paste it into the name box and check before you pay for a rename.

Why did my star turn yellow?

You copied an emoji star such as ⭐, which is always drawn in colour. Use ★ or ☆ if you want the star to match your text.
