How to make vaporwave text

  1. Type a word or phrase in the box. The wide style and its spaced and bracketed variations update as you type.
  2. Tap the version you like. You'll see "Copied ✓".
  3. Paste it into your caption, edit, bio or chat.

Below the tool there's a full wide alphabet chart with A–Z, a–z and 0–9. Tap any single letter to copy it, which is handy when you only want to fix one character or build a word by hand.

What is full width text?

Wide letters were not made for memes. They come from East Asian typography. Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters are roughly square, and each one fills a full cell in a grid. Normal English letters are only about half that width. So that English letters could sit neatly in the same grid, computer systems added "full width" versions of A–Z, a–z, numbers and punctuation. Unicode keeps them in a block called Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms.

In the early 2010s, vaporwave borrowed them. Vaporwave is a music and internet art style that remixes the look of the 1980s and 1990s: pink and teal gradients, palm trees, marble statues, old computer windows, empty shopping malls and slowed-down songs. Writing AESTHETIC in full width text became its calling card, because the extra space feels slow, dreamy and a little bit "imported".

Wide text vs spaced out text

They look similar, but they work differently:

StyleExampleHow it worksGood to know
Wide (full width)retroEach letter swaps to its full width twinThe classic vaporwave font look
Spacedr e t r oNormal letters with a space between eachWorks everywhere, but uses about twice the characters
Lenticular【r】【e】【t】【r】【o】Every letter sits in 【 】 bracketsBold, poster-like titles
Corner brackets『r』『e』『t』『r』『o』Every letter sits in 『 』 bracketsA lighter, softer frame

Spaced out text uses ordinary letters, so it shows correctly on every device. Wide letters are a single character each, but some apps count them as two. X, for example, currently counts most wide characters double. If you're close to a limit, pick your platform in the menu and watch the counter.

Japanese-style decorations for vaporwave captions

Classic vaporwave art often mixes English with Japanese text and heavy brackets. You can get that feel with the decoration styles:

  • 【 SUNSET MALL 】 for a bold, album-cover title
  • 『 night drive 』 for a quieter caption
  • ᐯ卂卩ㄖ尺 for a stylised, Japanese-looking word
The Asian-style lookalike font uses real Chinese characters picked only for their shape. To someone who reads Chinese or Japanese, they don't spell your word; they are separate characters with their own meanings. Use them as decoration, not as a message. If you want real Japanese, ask someone who reads it.

Vaporwave text ideas for edits, captions and names

  • Video edits: put a wide title like late night radio over a slowed-down clip. Text tools in video apps usually accept pasted text, but preview it before you post.
  • Captions: one wide word plus two retro emoji (🌴 🌆 📼 💿) is plenty. Keep the rest of the caption normal so it stays easy to read.
  • Playlist and channel names: wide letters suit lo-fi playlists and chill server channels. Some apps limit special characters in names, so test first.
  • Reflections: pair a word with its mirror text version for a dreamy, glassy effect.
  • Retro borders: add dividers and kaomoji from the text art page around your wide text.

Wide letters are part of a bigger toolbox. If you want a full aesthetic text generator, the aesthetic fonts page groups them with soft, minimal and dark looks, and cool fonts covers edgier styles.

Where wide letters work, and why they can look uneven

Because full width letters are used every day in Chinese, Japanese and Korean text, almost every phone has a font for them. They rarely show as boxes, which is less true for many other fancy styles. On the other hand, your phone may borrow them from a different font than the rest of your text, so their shape and spacing can look slightly different from normal letters.

Usernames on most apps only accept plain letters, so keep wide letters for display names, bios and captions. Our TikTok fonts page has more on name and bio rules there. Screen readers may read wide or spaced words one letter at a time, so keep important information in plain text.

Frequently asked questions

What is vaporwave text?

It's text written in full width letters, often with brackets or spaces, inspired by the vaporwave music and art style. The wide spacing gives it a slow, retro, dreamy feel.

Is wide text the same as a vaporwave font?

Mostly, yes. People say "vaporwave font", but it isn't a font file. It's a set of full width Unicode characters that you copy and paste, so it shows up for everyone who reads it.

Can I type full width text without copying it?

Japanese and Chinese keyboard input methods often have a full width mode for letters and numbers. Copying from this page is usually quicker if you don't use those keyboards already.

Does wide text count as more characters?

Each wide letter is one character, but some apps count it as two. X currently does this for most wide characters. Our counter uses the strict count, so you can check before you paste.

Can I use wide letters in my Instagram or TikTok username?

No, usernames usually only accept plain letters, numbers and a few symbols. Wide letters generally work in your display name, bio, captions and comments.

What's the difference between wide text and spaced out text?

Wide text swaps each letter for a full width character. Spaced out text keeps normal letters and adds a space between them. Spaced text works everywhere but uses more of your character limit.
