Single, double and overline: how they work
Underlined text copy and paste works because the line is not formatting. Each letter is followed by a Unicode combining mark, a character with no width of its own that draws onto the letter before it. Because the line is part of the text, it stays when you paste.

Double underline text is heavier than a single line, so save it for one key word or a total. Overline is rare in everyday writing, which is exactly why it catches the eye in a title.

Why you may see gaps under some letters
Each letter carries its own short piece of line, and the font on the reader's device decides how wide that piece is. On many phones the pieces join into a smooth underline. On others you see tiny gaps, especially around narrow letters like i and l, or between words.
Letters that dip below the line, such as g, j, p, q and y, also cross the underline, so it can look busy. A word without those letters looks cleanest. As with any Unicode trick, check how it looks in the real app before you post.
Spaces matter too. If a mark follows each space, the line continues between words. If not, each word gets its own underline. The live preview shows which you are getting.
Combining underline with bold or italic
The underline styles here sit on normal letters. If you want a mix, such as a bold title followed by an underlined word, open the Name and Bio Builder, which lets you give each word its own style. How to underline on Instagram and other apps
Instagram has no underline option in bios, captions or comments, and neither do TikTok or most Facebook posts. Unicode is the only way there: copy an underline style and paste it in. Our Instagram fonts page explains which Instagram fields accept fancy text.
A few apps have their own formatting codes, and these only work inside that app:
- Discord underlines text written as
__text__in messages. - WhatsApp has no underline code. Its
_text_code makes italics, which surprises many people. To underline in WhatsApp, paste Unicode underline instead.

Underlined text, links and screen readers
Online, an underline usually means "this is a link". Readers may try to tap your underlined words and wonder why nothing happens, so use underline for headings and short labels rather than random words in a sentence.
Screen readers may also stumble. Some announce the mark after every letter, something like "combining low line", while others ignore it, so the emphasis is lost either way. Put important information in plain words. The tool's readability badge flags styles like this.
