How to use the mirror text generator
- Type a word, name or sentence in the box above.
- Look at the flip styles: mirrored, reversed and upside down all update as you type.
- Tap the one you want. "Copied ✓" means it's ready to paste.
- Paste it into a chat, a caption, a puzzle sheet or anywhere else that accepts text.
Under the tool, the alphabet chart shows every mirrored letter. Tap a single letter to copy it, which is useful when you are making a puzzle by hand.
Mirror vs reverse vs upside down: three different effects
People often mix these up. Here is the same phrase in all three:
| Effect | Example | What happens | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mirror | bnɘiɿʇ ollɘH | Order is reversed and each letter is swapped for a flipped lookalike | Hold your screen up to a real mirror |
| Reverse | dneirf olleH | Only the order is reversed; letters stay normal | Read from right to left |
| Upside down | puǝᴉɹɟ ollǝH | Letters are rotated and the order is reversed | Turn your phone around |
So "reverse text" and "backwards text" are the same thing, and this page doubles as a reverse text generator. Mirror writing goes one step further and also flips each letter. If you want text that looks like it was turned over, try the upside down text generator.
How mirrored letters work, and why some have no twin
Unicode has no button that flips a letter. Instead, the generator does two things. First, it reverses the order of your text. Second, it replaces each letter with a character that looks like its mirror image, often borrowed from the phonetic alphabet linguists use or from other scripts.
- Symmetric letters need no change. A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X and Y look the same in a mirror.
- Some letters are each other's reflection. b and d, and p and q, simply swap places.
- Some have no good twin. For a few letters, Unicode has no convincing flipped version, so the generator uses the closest match or leaves the letter as it is.
That's why mirrored letters never look 100% perfect, and why they may look slightly different on each phone. Because the characters come from other alphabets, mirror text is also hard to search, and screen readers may read it as strange sounds.
Leonardo da Vinci and the history of mirror writing
The most famous mirror writer is Leonardo da Vinci. He wrote most of the notes in his notebooks from right to left, with every letter reversed. Historians aren't sure why. He was left-handed, so writing that way may have stopped his hand from smudging wet ink. Others think it kept his ideas a little more private, although anyone with a mirror could read them.
You also see mirror writing on the road. In many countries the word AMBULANCE is printed backwards on the front of the vehicle, so drivers ahead read it the right way round in their rear-view mirror.
Fun ways to use mirror and backwards text
| Idea | Example | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Escape room clue | ƚɒm ɘʜƚ ɿɘbnu ʞool | Players need a mirror to solve it |
| Kids' treasure hunt | nɘʜɔƚiʞ ɘʜƚ ni ɘulɔ ƚxɘn | A fun reading challenge |
| Chat prank | dnuof tsuj I tahw sseug | Friends have to slow down and decode it |
| Palindrome check | step on no pets | A palindrome reads the same in reverse |
| Dreamy caption | dream mɒɘɿb | A word next to its reflection |
Mirror text pairs well with wide letters for a retro, glassy caption; see the vaporwave text page. For a creepier look, mix it with glitch text.
Where mirror text works
Mirror and reverse text paste into most apps: chats, captions, comments and bios. Username fields usually reject the special letters, and some game name fields may too, so test first. If someone sends you mirror text and you just want to read it, paste it into our fancy text to normal text converter. For more styles that turn heads, browse cool fonts.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mirror text and reverse text?
Reverse text only changes the order of the letters. Mirror text reverses the order and also flips each letter, so it looks like a real reflection.
How do I read mirror text?
Hold your screen in front of a mirror and it reads normally. You can also read it right to left with a little practice.
Why do some mirrored letters look wrong?
Unicode doesn't have a perfect flipped twin for every letter, so the generator uses the closest lookalike. Your phone's fonts also change how those characters look.
Is this the same as flipping text in a photo editor?
No. A photo editor flips an image perfectly, but you can't paste it as text. This tool uses real characters, so you can paste the result into messages, captions and documents.
Can I turn mirror writing back into normal text?
Yes. Paste it into the unstyle converter to change the lookalike letters back. If it still reads right to left, copy the reverse style here to flip the order.
Who was famous for mirror writing?
Leonardo da Vinci. He filled his notebooks with right-to-left mirror writing, and historians still debate the exact reason.
