How upside down text works
Chat apps cannot rotate text, so the generator uses two tricks.
- Lookalike letters. Each letter is swapped for a Unicode character that looks like it has been turned 180 degrees. Many come from the phonetic alphabet, so "a" becomes ɐ, "e" becomes ǝ and "h" becomes ɥ. Some letters simply trade places: "n" and "u", or "p" and "d".
- Reversed order. The whole line is then written backwards, so it reads correctly once the screen is turned around. "Hello" becomes ollǝH.
That is the closest you can get to rotating text 180 degrees in plain text. Letters like o, s, x and z already look much the same either way up.
Letters with no perfect upside-down twin
Lowercase flips cleanly, but Unicode does not have a rotated version of every character, so some upside down letters are close stand-ins:
- Capitals are the trickiest. Some borrow maths or line-drawing symbols, and a few have only rough lookalikes, so they can look a little off or show as boxes on older devices.
- Digits are a mix: 6 and 9 simply swap, while others borrow shapes from other scripts.
- Punctuation follows along: a question mark becomes ¿, an exclamation mark becomes ¡, and a full stop rises to the top of the line.
For the neatest result, write in lowercase.

A few tips make the joke land better:
- Keep it to one line. A long flipped paragraph is more tiring than funny.
- Add an emoji yourself. Emoji do not flip, but the upside-down face 🙃 suits the mood.
- Hide answers, not secrets. Flipped text slows readers down just enough to hide a quiz answer or a mild spoiler. Anyone can still read it, so never use it for private information.

Most phones do not rotate the screen fully upside down, so the easiest way is to turn the phone around in your hands or tilt your head. Short phrases are much easier than long sentences. Where it works, and who can read it
The lowercase lookalikes are common characters, so flipped text usually shows in Instagram comments, TikTok, WhatsApp, Discord and most other apps. Capitals and some digits use rarer characters that older devices may show as boxes. Name fields in apps and games may be stricter, so try it first.
Screen readers have a hard time here. They read the lookalike characters as unrelated phonetic letters, in reverse order, so the result sounds like nonsense or is skipped. Flipped text is great for a joke. Keep anything people actually need to know in plain text.
