How to use these WhatsApp fonts
- Type your name, status or message in the box. All styles change as you type.
- The tool is set to WhatsApp, and the Works on WhatsApp filter hides styles that may show as boxes on many phones.
- Pick Name or About and check the counter, so your text is not cut off.
- Tap a style to copy it.
- Paste it into a chat, your status, your profile Name or your About.
WhatsApp text format codes (built in)
WhatsApp has simple formatting for messages. Put these symbols around your words before you send:
| Format | Type this | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | *Happy Birthday* | The easy way to write WhatsApp bold text |
| Italic | _see you soon_ | Underscores on both sides |
| Strikethrough | ~old plan~ | One tilde on each side |
| Monospace | ```meeting at 6``` | Three backticks on each side |
| Inline code | `code` | One backtick on each side |
| Bulleted list | * milk or - milk | Symbol and a space at the start of each line |
| Numbered list | 1. milk | Number, full stop and a space |
| Quote | > quoted text | Angle bracket and a space |
On many phones you can also select a word and pick Bold, Italic or Strikethrough from the pop-up menu. The list, quote and inline code formats are newer, so a friend on an old app version may see the plain symbols instead.
Stylish fonts for WhatsApp vs the built-in codes
The codes are best for normal chats. They are quick, easy to read and friendly for screen readers. But they are made for messages. In your profile Name and About, typing *Rahul* usually just shows the asterisks.
A stylish font for WhatsApp is different. These are Unicode characters, special letters that show up anywhere you paste them: your name, About, status, group names and chats. They also stay styled when you forward the text to another app. Cursive, gothic and bubble letters only come this way. Our stylish fonts page has many more decorated versions.
WhatsApp name style and About ideas
Your name can be up to 25 characters and your About up to 139. Fancy letters can count as 2 each, so keep it short.
| Where | Example | Mood |
|---|---|---|
| Name | โ ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ต๐๐น โ | Bold and confident |
| Name | ๊งเผบ ๐๐ป๐ฒ๐๐ช เผป๊ง | Elegant |
| About | สแด๊ฑส ยท แดสษขแดษดแด แดแดสส๊ฑ แดษดสส | Simple and clear |
To change your name or About, open WhatsApp Settings, tap your profile at the top, then tap Name or About, paste and save. Menus can look a little different on Android and iPhone.
Which styles look best on WhatsApp
Chats are read quickly on small screens, so choose styles that stay clear:
- Bold sans, such as ๐๐ผ๐ป๐ด๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐๐น๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐, for one line that must stand out.
- Script, such as ๐ฏ๐ฝ๐ถ๐๐ ๐โด๐, for wishes and greetings.
- Small caps, such as แดษดแดแดสษช, for a neat name or About.
These styles change English letters (A to Z), and some also change numbers. Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and other scripts stay exactly as you typed them, so you can pair a styled English name with a greeting in your own language.
WhatsApp status fonts
When you post a text status, WhatsApp lets you switch between a few built-in fonts and background colours. You can also paste a Unicode style into a text status for a look the built-in fonts don't have. For sparkly greetings like "Good night" or "Happy Birthday", try the glitter text generator, and add a set from our emoji combos.
The blank name trick
WhatsApp usually won't save an empty name. Some people paste an invisible character, such as the Hangul Filler, so the name looks blank. Our invisible character page explains how it works and which character to try. Be aware that it doesn't hide you: people who saved your number still see the name they saved, others still see your number, and WhatsApp can block the trick in any update.
Keep it readable for family groups
Family groups often include older phones, where rare characters can show as empty boxes (โก). Screen readers also read fancy letters badly. Write addresses, times, phone numbers and money amounts in plain text. Use the built-in *bold* code to make a key detail stand out, and keep stylish fonts for names, greetings and status.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write bold text on WhatsApp?
Put an asterisk on each side, like *hello*. You can also select a word and choose Bold from the menu on many phones.
How do I change my WhatsApp font style?
WhatsApp has no font menu for chats. Copy a stylish font from this page and paste it, or use the built-in codes for bold, italic and strikethrough.
Can I use stylish fonts in my WhatsApp name?
Yes. Paste a style into your profile Name. Keep it short, because fancy letters can count as 2 characters.
How do I write strikethrough text on WhatsApp?
Type ~text~. For crossed-out text that also works in your name or other apps, use our strikethrough text generator.
Do the *bold* and _italic_ codes work in my About?
Usually not. They are made for messages. Use a Unicode style for your About instead.
Why does my friend see boxes instead of my stylish text?
Their phone does not have that character. Choose styles marked "Works almost everywhere", or ask them to update their phone software.
Is there a monospace font for WhatsApp?
Yes. Use three backticks inside chats, or the typewriter font for a monospace look that also works in your name.
