How to use the Old English font generator
- Type a name, word or short phrase in the box above.
- The Gothic category is open, so regular and bold blackletter appear first, along with decorated versions.
- Tap a style to copy it. "Copied โ" confirms it.
- Paste it wherever you like. For a single letter, tap it in the gothic alphabet chart below.
It works as a gothic text generator too: the same letters are often called a gothic font. Writing a name for a game or app? Pick it in the platform menu. The "Works on" filter then hides styles that are likely to fail there, and the counter shows how much space you have.
What is blackletter, or Fraktur?
Blackletter is the dense, pointed lettering used in much of Europe during the Middle Ages. Gutenberg printed his famous Bible in it in the 1450s, and a variety called Fraktur stayed common in German printing until the 20th century.
In English it is often nicknamed "Old English" lettering. That name is about the look, not the language: the Old English language of the early Middle Ages was mostly written in a different, rounder script.
The gothic letters on this page are not a font file. They are Unicode characters from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, where mathematicians use Fraktur letters as special symbols. Because they are characters, they keep their shape when you paste them almost anywhere.
Regular vs bold gothic letters
- Regular Fraktur, ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐จ๐ข ๐ฑ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ฐ, is thinner and feels more historic.
- Bold Fraktur, ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐, is heavier and easier to read on a small screen. It is the style in the alphabet chart below.
Regular Fraktur has one quirk. Five capitals, โญ โ โ โ โจ, existed in Unicode long before the maths alphabets because mathematicians already used them, for example as symbols for the real and imaginary parts of a number. Unicode left gaps for those letters and reuses the older characters from the Letterlike Symbols block. On some phones they are drawn by a different font, so they can look slightly out of place. In bold, ๐ฎ ๐ณ ๐ด ๐ฝ ๐ all come from one matching set.
There are no Fraktur digits in Unicode, so numbers stay plain.

Ideas for gothic letters
- Tattoo previews. Blackletter is a classic tattoo style for names, dates and family words. Compare options at a large size with the tattoo font generator, then let a professional artist draw the final design. Unicode text is a preview, not a stencil.
- Gaming and clan names. Gothic capitals look tough in a name tag. Build a full decorated name with the stylish name generator, and test it before paying for any rename.
- Chicano and streetwear style. Old English lettering is closely tied to Chicano art, lowrider culture and streetwear. A single bold word, like a family name or neighbourhood, carries that look best.
- Metal, horror and Halloween. Pair gothic letters with skulls or daggers, or add a little glitch text for a haunted feel.
- A softer alternative. If gothic feels too heavy, a cursive font keeps the elegance without the edge. For more edgy styles, browse cool fonts.
Readability caveats
Blackletter was designed for a page, not a phone screen. A few habits keep it readable:
- Avoid all capitals. Gothic capitals are ornate, and a whole word in them is hard to read. Write "Legend", not "LEGEND".
- Keep it short. In Fraktur, letters like n, u and m look alike, so one or two words work better than a sentence.
- Think about screen readers. They may announce each gothic letter as "mathematical fraktur capital ..." or skip it, so a teammate or follower using one may never hear your name. Put the plain spelling in your bio or profile.
If someone sees boxes instead of letters, their device lacks a font for these characters. Older phones are the usual cause. The compatibility badge on each style gives a quick hint.
Frequently asked questions
Is Old English text the same as the Old English language?
No. "Old English" here is a common name for blackletter lettering. The language spoken in England over a thousand years ago is something different, and it was usually written in another script.
Can I download this Old English font?
No. These are Old English letters to copy and paste, made of Unicode characters, not a font file. For printing, use a design app with a blackletter font file installed.
Why do some gothic capitals look different from the rest?
In regular Fraktur, C, H, I, R and Z come from an older Unicode block, so some devices draw them with another font. Bold Fraktur avoids this.
Will gothic letters work in my game name?
Sometimes. Many games limit which characters a name can use, and the rules change. Try the name first, especially before spending a rename card or in-game currency.
Is a blackletter font good for a tattoo?
It is a classic tattoo style. Use this page to compare words and layouts, then take your idea to a professional tattoo artist, who will draw lettering that ages well on skin.
Why don't my numbers turn gothic?
Unicode has no Fraktur digits. Numbers stay in their normal shape, or you can write them as words.
