How to use the italic text generator
- Type a quote, title or phrase in the box above.
- The preview shows sans italic, serif italic and both bold italic styles at once.
- Tap a card to copy it ("Copied โ" confirms it), then paste it into your app.
- Want a single slanted letter? Tap it in the italic alphabet chart below.
This italics generator also keeps your last copies in the Recent list on your device, so you can grab a quote again without retyping it. Tap โ on a style to pin it as a favorite.
When italic text helps
Italics are the quiet voice of writing. Where bold shouts, italic leans in. They are a good fit for:
- Quotes. A favourite line in a bio or caption feels set apart when it is slanted.
- Titles. Style guides put book, film, album and show titles in italics, which makes recommendation posts look tidy.
- Softer emphasis. One italic word changes the tone of a sentence without sounding loud: "I ๐๐๐๐๐๐ฆ mean it."
- Inner thoughts and asides. Story captions and comments often use italics for a little side comment.
- Words from another language. A Hindi or Tagalog word inside an English caption is traditionally set in italics.
For hooks and headings, bold text is the better tool.
Sans italic or serif italic?
Like bold, these italic letters are real Unicode characters from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, not a font file. They are drawn slanted, so the slant stays when you paste. There are two main looks:
- Sans italic, ๐ญ๐ช๐ฌ๐ฆ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ช๐ด, is clean and modern. It is the style in the alphabet chart below.
- Serif italic, ๐๐๐๐ ๐กโ๐๐ , looks like a line from a printed novel. It suits quotes and book titles.
Both also come in bold italic for stronger slanted text. If you want loops and flourishes rather than a simple slant, try the cursive font generator.
The serif italic h quirk (and the missing numbers)
Serif italic has one odd letter: the small h. Long before Unicode added its maths alphabets, it already had an italic h as the physics symbol for Planck's constant, in the Letterlike Symbols block. To avoid a duplicate, the serif italic alphabet has a gap where h should be, and generators use that older symbol instead. You can see it in โ๐๐๐๐ ๐กโ๐๐๐.
On most phones it blends in. On a few devices it is drawn by a different font and looks slightly different in size or weight. Sans italic has no gap, so choose it if every letter must match.
Unicode also has no italic digits. Numbers stay upright, as in ๐๐ช๐ฏ๐ค๐ฆ ๐ค๐ข๐ฃ๐ซ.

Where italic letters work
Italic font copy and paste usually works in Instagram bios, captions and comments, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube comments and X. On X, each styled letter usually counts as two characters; the X fonts page counts this for you. On LinkedIn, italics suit quotes and book recommendations; see LinkedIn text formatting for professional tips.
Some chat apps have their own italic codes. WhatsApp turns _text_ into italics, but only inside WhatsApp chats. Unicode italic also works in your WhatsApp name, About and status, as explained on the WhatsApp fonts page. If you also want a line under a word, the underline text generator handles that.
Italics, screen readers and boxes
A quote is often the most meaningful line in a profile, so think about who can read it. Screen readers may announce italic letters one by one with long names, or skip them, so the quote is lost. Keep quotes short, and write the author's name in plain text. The tool's readability badge marks styles that screen readers handle badly.
If italic letters appear as boxes, the device lacks a font for them. This is mostly an issue on older phones and computers. Test on a friend's phone before using italics somewhere important.
Frequently asked questions
Is this an italic font file?
No. It produces Unicode characters for copy and paste. There is nothing to install, and the text keeps its slant in apps that have no formatting options.
Why does the h look different in serif italic?
Unicode reuses the older Planck's constant symbol for the serif italic h, so some devices draw it with a different font. Sans italic avoids this.
Why don't numbers turn italic?
Unicode does not include italic digits, so numbers stay upright. Most readers will not notice in a short line.
How do I write italics on WhatsApp?
In chats, put underscores around the word, like _hello_. For your name, About or status, where that code does not apply, copy italic text from this page instead.
Can I put italic text in my Instagram bio?
Usually, yes. Copy the style and paste it into the bio field. Check the preview before saving, since a very old phone may show boxes.
Is slanted text the same as cursive?
Not quite. Italic letters lean but keep their normal shapes. Cursive letters have loops and joins, like handwriting. Italic is calmer and easier to read in longer lines.
